Biography:
Jonathan Agre is a member of the research staff at the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) in the Information Technology and Systems Division, located in Alexandria, VA, providing consulting to the Department of Defense on areas related to Information and Communications Technology. He has been involved with various areas of Computer Science research and development for the past 36 years in industry, government and academia. At IDA he has been working on projects concerned with text mining, command and control systems, DoD network visualization and the Militarily Critical Technology List reengineering effort. Prior to joining IDA, he was Vice President and General Manager at Fujitsu Laboratories of America, leading a research lab focused on Secure Pervasive Computing and collaboration with universities such as the University of Maryland. While at Fujitsu, he was active in many standards activities including the Trusted Computing Group, IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.16, WiMAX Forum and INCITS M1 Biometrics (ISO/IEC SC37). Previous experience includes work on sensor and communication networks for Mars exploration at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, simulation, distributed sensor and computing systems at Rockwell Science Center and as a Computer Science Professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).
He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Maryland in 1981 in performance evaluation of distributed systems. Dr. Agre has over 40 patents and patent applications and over 70 publications in computer and communications topics.
